Heroism in the Harry Potter Series

Heroism in the Harry Potter Series
By:"Dr Katrin Berndt","Dr Lena Steveker"
Published on 2013-05-28 by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.

Taking up the various conceptions of heroism that are conjured in the Harry Potter series, this collection examines the ways fictional heroism in the twenty-first century challenges the idealized forms of a somewhat simplistic masculinity associated with genres like the epic, romance and classic adventure story. The collection's three sections address broad issues related to genre, Harry Potter's development as the central heroic character and the question of who qualifies as a hero in the Harry Potter series. Among the topics are Harry Potter as both epic and postmodern hero, the series as a modern-day example of psychomachia, the series' indebtedness to the Gothic tradition, Harry's development in the first six film adaptations, Harry Potter and the idea of the English gentleman, Hermione Granger's explicitly female version of heroism, adult role models in Harry Potter, and the complex depictions of heroism exhibited by the series' minor characters. Together, the essays suggest that the Harry Potter novels rely on established generic, moral and popular codes to develop new and genuine ways of expressing what a globalized world has applauded as ethically exemplary models of heroism based on responsibility, courage, humility and kindness.

Blubber

Blubber
By:"Judy Blume"
Published on 2012-03-21 by Yearling

Blubber is a good name for her, the note from Wendy says about Linda. Jill crumples it up and leaves it on the corner of her desk. She doesn't want to think about Linda or her dumb report on the whale just now. Jill wants to think about Halloween. But Robby grabs the note, and before Linda stops talking it has gone halfway around the room. That's where it all starts. There's something about Linda that makes a lot of kids in her fifth-grade class want to see how far they can go -- but nobody, least of all Jill, expects the fun to end where it does. A Model for Improving Reading and Literacy Skills Among Middle School Students

A Model for Improving Reading and Literacy Skills Among Middle School Students
By:
Published on 2007 by ProQuest

Students without basic reading and literacy skills have problems in college, in the job market, and in understanding societal issues. However, there is a lack of consensus among reading specialists on how best to assist middle school students struggling with reading. This qualitative research study applied a modified Delphi exploration technique to develop a best practices model, as identified by 25 experts in the field of reading and literacy, for middle school educators to improve the reading and literacy skills of students and reduce the summer learning loss of children who are economically disadvantaged. This study sought to understand what pedagogical facilitation practices could be applied to increase reading and literacy among middle school students, how schools can adjust their school years, what challenges are involved in improving literacy and reading levels, and how schools can provide summer school programs to improve literacy. Qualitative data gathered from the seed questions were organized using NVivo software. During the analysis, a line-by-line examination of the data was conducted, leading to the revelation of themes according to the participants' responses, which were then used to develop a survey to gain consensus from the experts. The results of the study indicated that teachers and administrators can likely achieve positive social change by developing positive communication between the school and home environment; by extending, and in some cases requiring, summer school programs; and by initiating more tutorial programs, such as Literacy 180, to assist middle school children who are lagging behind their peers.

Comic Books

Comic Books
By:"Shirrel Rhoades"
Published on 2008 by Peter Lang

This book is an insider's guide to how the comic book industry works. You'll learn how comic book superheroes are created and the deeper meanings they represent. You'll follow the development of sequential art storytelling - from caveman wall paintings to modern manga and cinematic techniques. Here you will explore comics in all forms: those flimsy pamphlets we call comic books; thick graphic novels; Japanese manga; and blockbuster movies featuring epic battles between good and evil. But behind it all, you'll discover how comics are an intellectual property business, the real money found in licensed bedsheets and fast-food merchandise, heart-pounding theme park rides and collectible toys, video games, and Hollywood extravaganza featuring such popular superheroes as Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men, and Batman.

Classics and Comics

Classics and Comics
By:"George Kovacs","C. W. Marshall"
Published on 2011 by Oxford University Press

Since at least 1939, when daily-strip caveman Alley Oop time-traveled to the Trojan War, comics have been drawing (on) material from Greek and Roman myth, literature and history. At times the connection is cosmetic-as perhaps with Wonder Woman's Amazonian heritage-and at times it is almost irrelevant-as with Hercules' starfaring adventures in the 1982 Marvel miniseries. But all of these make implicit or explicit claims about the place of classics in modern literary culture. Classics and Comics is the first book to explore the engagement of classics with the epitome of modern popular literature, the comic book. This volume collects sixteen articles, all specially commissioned for this volume, that look at how classical content is deployed in comics and reconfigured for a modern audience. It opens with a detailed historical introduction surveying the role of classical material in comics since the 1930s. Subsequent chapters cover a broad range of topics, including the incorporation of modern theories of myth into the creation and interpretation of comic books, the appropriation of characters from classical literature and myth, and the reconfiguration of motif into a modern literary medium. Among the well-known comics considered in the collection are Frank Miller's 300 and Sin City, DC Comics' Wonder Woman, Jack Kirby's The Eternals, Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and examples of Japanese manga. The volume also includes an original 12-page \
